On Wednesday 20 september at 12:30 pianist Yuqi Han and Singer Shuhang will be giving a concert “Ancient Chinese Poems in Songs” at de bblthk. Come by and enjoy their beautiful sounds. Entrance is free.

In history, poetry is consistently held in high regard in China. Traditional forms of Chinese poetry are rhymed, and express its musicality in combination with the nature of Chinese language. In some dynasties poems were written to the set rhythms of existing tunes, and even as opera librettos.

In this concert Yuqi and Shuhang are presenting songs of ancient poems that are composed in modern days for classical singers. Yuqi Han was born in China, and graduated from Utrecht Conservatory where she studied with Dutch pianist Martyn van den Hoek between 2016 and 2018. She received a score of 10 for her master final concert. While living in the Netherlands she has been active both as a soloist and a chamber musician at various main venues in the Netherlands as well as in other countries of Europe. She is also the original member of Florestan Ensemble. Shuhang started to follow singing lessons at age 10 in China. She studied Chinese folk singing with Huizhu Li and classical singing with Li Liu. Recent years she took classical singing lessons from Hanny van Lankeren in Wageningen. Shuhang performs in the Netherlands since 2009. In 2013 together with other members in Wageningen she formed the Traditional Chinese Ensemble SweetPotato. Shuhang is a PhD candidate of Wageningen University, specialized in plant breeding against insect resistance.

Initiated by SweetPotato, this concert belongs to the concert series “Ancient Chinese Poems in Songs” “Chinese Folk Songs” and “Artistic Songs of China”. The musicians are passionate to bring authentic music from China to the Netherlands and the international environment. The concert joins the 2023 celebration of 10-year anniversary of SweetPotato. Op woensdag 20 september om 12:30 uur zullen pianist Yuqi Han en zangeres Shuhang een concert geven getiteld "Ancient Chinese Poems in Songs" in de bblthk. Kom langs en geniet van hun prachtige klanken. De toegang is gratis.

In de geschiedenis wordt poëzie consequent hoog gewaardeerd in China. Traditionele vormen van Chinese poëzie zijn van rijm voorzien en drukken hun muzikaliteit uit in combinatie met de aard van de Chinese taal. In sommige dynastieën werden gedichten geschreven op bestaande muzikale ritmes, zelfs als opera-libretto's.

Tijdens dit concert presenteren Yuqi en Shuhang liederen gebaseerd op oude gedichten, gecomponeerd in moderne tijden voor klassieke zangers. Yuqi Han is geboren in China en studeerde af aan het Utrechts Conservatorium, waar ze tussen 2016 en 2018 studeerde bij de Nederlandse pianist Martyn van den Hoek. Ze behaalde een 10 voor haar eindexamen. Tijdens haar verblijf in Nederland is ze actief geweest als solist en kamermusicus op verschillende belangrijke podia in Nederland en andere Europese landen. Ze is ook het oorspronkelijke lid van het Florestan Ensemble. Shuhang begon op 10-jarige leeftijd zangles te nemen in China. Ze studeerde Chinese volkszang bij Huizhu Li en klassieke zang bij Li Liu. De afgelopen jaren volgde ze klassieke zanglessen bij Hanny van Lankeren in Wageningen. Shuhang treedt op in Nederland sinds 2009. In 2013 richtte ze samen met andere leden in Wageningen het Traditioneel Chinees Ensemble SweetPotato op. Shuhang is promovendus aan de Wageningen University, gespecialiseerd in plantenveredeling tegen insectenresistentie.

Dit concert, geïnitieerd door SweetPotato, maakt deel uit van de concertserie "Ancient Chinese Poems in Songs", "Chinese Folksongs" en "Artistic Songs of China". De musici zijn gepassioneerd om authentieke muziek uit China naar Nederland en de internationale omgeving te brengen. Het concert sluit aan bij de viering van het 10-jarig jubileum van SweetPotato in 2023. Een ander concert van deze viering met traditionele Chinese instrumenten zal plaatsvinden in de bblthk op 5 november.
